QUEST: July 20

Jubilee

Yesterday, I wrote about the “reunion” I enjoyed with Kathryn at the motel last night.  I could also have mentioned that, shortly after the end of my Quest, she and her old (did I say “old?”) classmates will gather for their 50th high school reunion.

I’ve been invited to that reunion, too.  I’ll be sure to get a haircut and change clothes, at the very least.

Fifty is a milestone number.  Many people show up for a 50th reunion who otherwise would skip them.  The 50th wedding anniversary is called “golden.”  And fifty, of course, is the number of years between what the Old Testament Israelites celebrated as years of “jubilee.”

(I don’t know whether modern-day Israelites still celebrate jubilee years.)

It might be worth studying the meaning behind the year of the jubilee.  I have my own conversations with The Lord about it, but those are personal, and I think the jubilee is one of those things everybody should investigate to see if there’s something in the concept that might be useful subjects for their own divine conversations.

Today, I said goodbye again to My Better Half, and walked 10.6 miles to the next place she parked Quester.  This is a lovely little roadside turnout shaded by some delightful tall cottonwoods.  It’s peaceful.

I’ll try to enjoy the peace tonight.

Thanks for following my Quest.  If you’d like to respond, please post a comment here, or  send an email to michael@michaelhume.net.  Either way, I look forward to reading your views when I return to my screen in late August.
