QUEST: July 26
Breath
Today I came a little way down the mountain, walking 14 miles to a little town where I have a reservation at an inexpensive motel. I’m “winded,” so it will be good to have a planned day of rest tomorrow.
I’ve always had asthma, and now I’m 63 and doing this Big Walk which is taking me to some pretty lofty elevations on some days. So the physical act of breathing is a challenge. What most of us take for granted (and what I take for granted most of the time) – the involuntary inhaling and exhaling that keeps our blood pumping, our heart ticking, and our life on the planet continuing – at certain times, I can’t take for granted at all.

Inhaling and exhaling physical air is, in my opinion, the most perfect metaphor for the “exchange” which is keeping my SOUL going, and that’s the give and take of the “Breath of Life.”
It’s probably very beneficial to have altitude and asthma cause me to have to focus on my breathing. To not take it for granted. Because each of us is only physically alive today because of the air we’re able to breathe; and our souls are only spiritually alive because of the “spirit” or Breath of Life God loans to us every day.
That’s not something I should ever take for granted. Though “granted” is exactly what it is. Not earned, by good works. Not purchased with money or any other creation. Simply granted, by the grace of God.
