QUEST: July 13
Hiking
I haven’t thought of my Quest along the lines of a “hike.” Except for a couple of days (like today), I’m just walking along paved roads, and many days don’t include much elevation change. That’s not a hike.
But today, I hiked. I traversed a 10,000-foot-high mountain pass, along a jeep trail I think most jeeps would find uncomfortable. It was about sixteen miles, too. So, that’s definitely a hike.

I will need a rest after that, and luckily, I have a rest day scheduled for tomorrow. I’m grateful for that, and for being able to sleep indoors again the next two nights.
I thought about riding a bicycle, or about turning the whole Quest into a camping trip. But I really thought the reason nobody talks about their “bike ride with The Lord” or their “camping trip with The Lord” – only their WALK – is because walking is the most distraction-free way to spend time with the Almighty.
I owned a car when I was in the military, but for a long stretch of months, I never used it. I rode my bicycle from the house I shared to Fort Bragg every morning, then rode several miles to the dinner theater where I moonlighted after work, then several miles back home late every night after the show.
They called me “Bicycle Mike” back in those days.
I’ve been called worse.
I was saving gas, and I was saving the planet.
I was such an extreme young environmentalist, I used to ride up to a fast food joint and demand that they give me hamburgers without wrapping them in paper. They never honored this request, but you can bet I honored myself for making it.
What a self-righteous bonehead I was. I hope this Walk With God will help me flush out some of my self-righteousness, and to bear fully in mind that there is only One righteous in all the universe.
Thanks for following my Quest. If you’d like to respond, please post a comment here, or send an email to michael@michaelhume.net. Either way, I look forward to reading your views when I return to my screen in late August.
